SIGLUM

Magdalena Charzyńska-Wójcik, Associate Professor at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin,  where she is chair of the Department of the History of English and Translation Studies (2014-) and was also dean of the Faculty of Humanities (2016-2021). In the fall semester of 2021/2022 she was a visiting fellow of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame, where she is an affiliated scholar (2022-).

Her major research interests lie in historical translations of the Psalter, with special focus on prose translations from Latin into Old, Middle and Early Modern English. Apart from English-language translations, she works on renditions of the Psalter into Polish, and in particular on a 16th-century prose translation from Latin. She deals with various aspects of Psalter translations related to linguistics and translation studies. Her current research projects are: (i) 17th-century English translation of the Psalms from the Vulgate made at the exiled court of James II Stuart at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, for which she discovered two manuscript witnesses and (ii) textual traditions of the psalm versions used in English medieval Books of Hours, where she employs digital humanities methods to assess degrees of similarity and relatedness between individual texts.
