Rǝtuʿa Haymanot („The Orthodox”) is a collection of Ethiopian homilies, most of which are concerned with various events from the life of Christ. It is attested in seventeen manuscript witnesses ranging chronologically between 1397/8 and 1958. Each witness contains a slightly different set of homilies. Although Rǝtuʿa Haymanot never enjoyed great popularity (as is evidenced by the modest number of manuscript witnesses), some of the homilies circulated widely, even though their sources were not acknowledged. Marcin Krawczuk, assistant professor at the Department of African Languages and Cultures at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw. His academic interests focus on Ethiopia, particularly on the manuscrupt heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. He has published translations from Ge’ez into Polish (Literatura na Świecie, 2014, no 7/8). His current research projects include a study of early Ethiopian Christian homiletics and the image of Muslims and Islam in Ge’ez literatures.
