“No worries – it’s just a music manuscript!”

We warmly invite you to a session dedicated to music manuscripts. To non-specialists, these sources may often appear complex and challenging. However, it is worth approaching music manuscripts not only as records of sound, but also as fully legitimate historical sources.

In this talk, dr Ewa Hauptman-Fischer will focus on two key aspects. First, she will discuss what musical sources can reveal, beyond the notation itself, and the role they play in historical research. Second, she will outline the characteristic features of musical notation that enable non-specialists to make preliminary assessments of a manuscript’s origins, both in terms of historical period and cultural context.
