Rǝtuʿa Haymanot: a collection of Ethiopian homilies

Rǝtuʿa Haymanot („The Orthodox”) is a collection of Ethiopian homilies, most of which are concerned with various events from the life of Christ. It is attested in seventeen manuscript witnesses ranging chronologically between 1397/8 and 1958. Each witness contains a slightly different set of homilies. Although Rǝtuʿa Haymanot never enjoyed great popularity (as is evidenced by the modest number of manuscript witnesses), some of the homilies circulated widely, even though their sources were not acknowledged. Although this collection is one of the oldest examples of original Ethiopian theological writing, it has not been the object of much academic research.

In the framework of the project the manuscripts of the collection are catalogued in the Beta Maṣāḥǝft digital environment https://betamasaheft.eu/ and the homilies themselves are translated into English with extensive philological, theological, and historical commentary. A close reading of the homilies reveals that their author had a deep knowledge of Ethiopian theological literature. A critical edition of selected homilies is planned in the future.
