Monika Opalińska, Associate Professor

Monika Opalińska is an associate professor of historical linguistics at the Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw. Her scholarly interests encompass historical phonology of Germanic languages, historical metrics, history of the English language and literature, and manuscript studies.

She has edited and translated Old English poetry into Polish, including The Dream of the Rood, the Exeter Book elegies, and versified prayers (Sen o Krzyżu. Staroangielski poemat mistyczny, WUW 2007, 2013, second edition; Pieśni Szarej Godziny. Elegie staroangielskie z Kodeksu z Exeter, WUW 2014). Her monograph, To the Rhythm of Poetry: A Study of Late Old English Metrical Prayers (WUW 2014), provides a detailed analysis of alliterative prayers and their manuscript witnesses from the 10th and 11th centuries.

Currently, she is working on a project tracing the multiform translations and paraphrases of the Pater Noster into Old and Middle English verse across manuscripts dated from the 10th to the 15th centuries.

Since 2021, she has been involved in a collaborative project focused on editing and reconstructing an 11th-century English psalter, known as the N-Psalter, and analyzing manuscript fragments from this codex. This innovative research integrates traditional philological methods with advanced physical and chemical analyses of manuscript sources (The N-Psalter). This project combines traditional philological methodology and physical and chemical analyses applied to manuscript sources.
