Marta Czyżak, Assistant Professor

Marta Czyżak is a curator in the Special Collections Department at the University Library in Toruń. She graduated in history from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, earning her doctoral degree with a dissertation titled “The Gniezno Cathedral Chapter in Light of the Metric from 1408–1448” (published in 2003). She is currently continuing her research into the Gniezno clergy and writing a monograph on The Vicars of Gniezno Cathedral from the 13th to the mid-15th Century in Comparison with Other Vicar Colleges in Medieval Poland and the German Empire.
Since 2008, she has been associated with the Manuscripts Section of the University Library in Toruń. Her research interests focus on the history of the Church and clergy in medieval Poland, as well as codicology. She co-authored the Catalogue of Manuscripts of the University Library in Toruń (2016) with Monika Jakubek-Raczkowska and Arkadiusz Wagner. Her publications include studies on the Gniezno cathedral clergy, such as “Pastoral Activity of Archbishop Wojciech Jastrzębiec: The 1426 Ordinance for the Clergy of Gniezno Cathedral” in Wojciech Jastrzębiec: In the Service of the Monarchy and the Church (2018), and analyses of manuscripts from Toruń’s collections, like “Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi by Peter of Poitiers (Pictaviensis) in the Manuscripts of the University Library in Toruń” in Textus et pictura: The Medieval Manuscript Codex as a Carrier of Contents, Meanings, and Artistic Values (2019).
Dr. Czyżak participated in the conservation and digitization project of the Pelplin Gradual L13. From 2020 to 2021, she was involved in the project Medieval Manuscript Fragments of Teutonic Prussia in Collections of the Parker Library, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, the C. Norwid Library in Elbląg, and the University Library in Toruń as Evidence in Reconstructing the History of Collections, supervised by by Dr. Paulina Pludra-Żuk, in collaboration with the Fragmentarium research laboratory at the University of Fribourg Fragmentarium: Teutonic Prussia.
